Durian from Penang Yum Yum

A selection of branded durians in a plantation in Balik Pulau, the durian centre of Penang Durians of Balik PulauIn Penang, Malaysia, the best place to get good durians is in the town of Balik Pulau, on the southwest corner of Penang Island. Balik Pulau is a 30 minute drive over the main range and has a lot of durian estates.
The following is a selection of branded durians
  • D11 "Number Eleven" is a very popular durian in the 70's. It has creamy yellow flesh with a pleasant taste and a subtle smell.
  • D604 The D604 was first cultivated by the late Mr. Teh Hew Hong of Sungai Pinang, Balik Pulau. The flesh is quite sweet, and has some "body" to it as the seed is small.
  • D600 This durian originates in Sungai Pinang in Balik Pulau. The flesh has a bittersweet taste to it, with a touch of sourness.
  • D700The flesh is darker than D600, like chrome yellow. Also slightly hard. Crispy, but the smell is not very strong.
  • Ang Sim (Red Heart) Ang Sim is a durian with flesh which is quite soft and very sweet, and dark yellow in colour. It also has a nice aroma.
  • Khun Poh This durian takes the name of the late Mr Lau Khun Poh, who first budded it. Khun Poh has beautiful orangy flesh with a slightly bitter-sweet taste and a heavy aroma.
  • Hor Loh (Water Gourd Durian) The flesh of the Hor Loh is very soft, dry and quite bitter. It has a sharp smell to it. Hor Loh was first cultivated at the Brown Estate of Sungai Ara. It got its name from its appearance resembling a "Hor Lor" pumpkin. If the durian hits the ground hard when it falls, the flesh tends to be bitter thereafter.
  • Ang Heh (Red Prawn Durian)Ang Heh originates from Pondok Upeh, Balik Pulau, and has a round-shaped husk. The orange reddish flesh is highly aromatic, very soft with a bitter-sweet taste.
  • Xiao Hung (Little Red Durian) Xiao Hung, whose name means "Little Red One," originates in Sungai Pinang, Balik Pulau. The flesh has a bittersweet taste to it, with a touch of sourness. There are only one or two seeds per section, but the flesh is thick.
  • Yah Kang (Centipede Durian)Although its flesh is whitish, the taste is superb, milky, like very sweet, melting chocolate. The name "yah kang" means centipede, and accounts for the number of centipedes found at the foot of the tree, hence giving it the rather unusual name.
  • Bak Eu (Pork Fat Durian) Bak Eu has a slightly acidic aroma. The flesh is whitish while the taste is quite bitter but nice.
  • D17 is dark cream flesh. The taste is slightly dry but sweet. It is a tasty durian.
  • Coupling This durian gets its unusual name because it looks like two durians joined together, one big and one small. When split open, you almost thought the two halves belong to two different durians. Coupling has whitish flesh which is slightly dry but tastes good.
  • Ooi Kyau (Tumeric Durian)The name Ooi Kyau (tumeric) describes the colour of the bright yellow flesh of this durian. It is very sweet and tasty.
  • Chaer Phoy (Green Skin Durian) Chaer Phoy is shaped like a small canteloupe. The skin is bright green, giving it the name which means "green skin". Chaer Phoy has creamy white flesh which is a bit dry, not too sweet but tasty.
  • Ang Jin (Red Yoke Durian)As the name suggests, Ang Jin Durian has deep orange flesh. It is very sweet and tasty.
  • Lin Fong Jiau This durian is named after Lin Fong Jiau, aka Mrs Jackie Chan. One wonders whether it is indicative of the relationship of the celebrity couple, for Lin Fong Jiau is a bittersweet.

Jalan - jalan Cari Makan - KL Area

OK this area i must say i am not that expert, especially in real down town KL (like jalan TAR, Chow Kit, etc. areas) So any of you know some good food do share in at the comment sections.

KL

  1. Kin Kin Chilli Pan mee - Off Jalan TAR, this one is my personal all time favorite!!! I never fails to travel from OUG to there every Sunday, as long as i am not outstation, for the past 2 years liao. Super nice Pan Mee (dry type), plus the egg, and the most important the chilli!!! Mmmmmmm yum yum. Business super good everyday, average must wait half to an hour!!! Just to know how famous they are, type Kin Kin Pan Mee in Google.com.my and search within Malaysia scope.
  2. Yang Kee Beef Noodle (Ngau Lam Mee) - OUG / Jalan Peel, Cheras - This is a very nice beef noodle store. Business is super good. Try their dry noodle and also their signature "lor pak lam" super tender beef that melts in your mouth the moment you eat it. BEST!!!
  3. Wong Ah Hwa (WAH) Roast chicken wing (siu kai yek) - Jalan Alor. Corner shop. nice for lots of other food but their signature is their siu kai yek. Super nice, especially eaten with chilli.
  4. Ah Loy Curry Mee - OUG , behind the row of Yang Kee shop. Must try their curry mee. Very nice and tasty. Their sui kau (dumpling) also not bad. Morning till night.
  5. Steven's Corner - OUG. Same row with Yang Kee. Ok, this one is a bit controversial. My recommendation is that you try their fried puyuh, kambing goreng (must try), and their naan. The rest of the food are so so. Food not cheap though, as a mamak shop.
  6. Pork noodle (Ju Yok Fan) - OUG. Morning only, corner coffee shop, facing Setven's corner, beside the wet market. Long queue so you won't miss it. Best Ju yok fan in this area.
  7. "Dai Chao" /Seafood - Sri Petaling, turn left after you see Sri Petaling hotel on your right, same street with The Store, but the shop not yet reach The Store. Best for fish, and other chinese dishes. Must try: Curry Wild Boar. Very nice.
  8. Drunken Cat restaurant - Jalan Peel, Cheras. Night time. Again it is chinese dishes style. Try their seafood, it is quite nice. A lot of people as well.
  9. D'Food Land - Bandar Manjalara, Kepong. Ok this one you need to ask around people when you get to Manjalara. It is very famous for Crab. It has 36 cooking methods for cooking crabs and all are nice !!! Must try: Cheese Crab with their special Bread Stick. The bread is so nice that you can eat it with the cheese crab sauce !!!! Don't bother to go on public holiday or Mother's/Father's Day. Too pack. Only dinner.
  10. Ulu Yam Loh Mee - Manjalara, Kepong. Used to be in the Wai Sik Kai of Kepong, but has move to this shop lot facing a Petronas station, in front of the Kepong Mosque area. Nice Loh Mee and very famous. Try their Yam flavoured Loh Mee and you will want for more.
  11. Loi Cha - Wai Sik Kai , Kepong. Very authentic and nice Hakka Loi Cha. Not advisable if you don't like the strong herbal and tea smell in the soup. Otherwise, this is must try for loi cha lovers.
  12. Wai Sik Kai Kepong. Lots of nice and famous hawker food there. One of the nice one is the Prawn Mee stalls. Lots of added choice to choose (kar liew)
  13. "Bei Ge" (a type of food looks like Kuay Teow) - At a lorong along Old Kepong road. Ok this is a bit tricky but when you are in Old Kepong road, just ask around chinese people for fried "bei ge" and they should know. Only at night, it is a old shop but this dish is rare and special and very nice, something like hailam Kuey teow is thick dark soya sauce.
  14. Jagoya Japanese Buffet - StarHill, upstairs. Need i say more? Very ice but a bit pricey.
  15. Hakka Restaurant - Jalan Kia Peng, KL. If you want authentic Hakka Chinese Food, go there. It happens to be my ex-colleagues' good friend who owns it. Very nice but a lot of time at night there is wedding dinner.
  16. Alexis Bistro - Bangsar / Great Eastern Mall. Nice and tasty cake. My personal favourite - Try their Tiramisu Cake. If you like live band, then go to the one in Great Eastern Mall. It has live band perfromance at certain nights, very nice.
  17. Strudels - Bangsar / Major shopping malls. Again good place for cakes.
  18. Nirvana Banana Leaf - Personal favourite for their banana leave rice. Opposite Bangsar Shopping Mall 2. Try their Chicken masala, and spicy tofu. Also for vege, must ask for a lot of Fried bittergourt. Yum Yum.
  19. Madam Kwan - Bangsar / KLCC/ Mid Valley. Must try their Nasi Bojari and also their nasi lemak. Then their Cendol for dessert.
  20. C-Jade Express - MidValley, LG. Try their roast pork, siew yok, etc. All very nice.
  21. Dorae Garden - Korean BBQ. Mont' Kiara. On a row of shops besides Projet Station, second floor between maybank, mamak and a vet clinic. Nicest Korean BBQ within Mont Kiara. Good service. Try their belly pork and their kimchi with pork and tofu soup. NICE!!! Mentioned Friend of Mr. Sang Soo Bae from Lafarge and you get special service...
  22. Italian Restaurant - TTDI, KL. Row facing the main road, after the bomba station. Try their pizzas and seafood fetuchinnis, nice and cheesy. Not cheap.
  23. Old Chang Kee Karipuff - Singapore / Major KL shopping Malls. RM1.80/RM2.00 for a Curry puff. But try it and you will know why it is that nice and worth the value. From Singapore.
  24. "Zhu Lin" - Taiwan finger snacks - 3rd Floor, old wing, 1-U, near TGV Cinema. Must try their Deep Fried porkchop, another fries like snack, and also their oyster porridge. Very nice.
  25. Just Thai - New Wing, LG, 1-U. If you miss your authentic Tom Yum Koong from Bangkok, then this is the right place for you. They sell authentic Tom Yum Koong (Thai Tomyum have 2 versions, the one we get normally in Malaysia is the murky Southern Thai version. Bangkok Tom Yum is the "clear" type, more spicy, and more sour). Also don't forget to order their mango with sticky rice dessert, orginally only Thai King can eats that!!!
  26. Fresh Coconut Drink - Sg. Buloh. From Sg. Buloh towards Sri Damansara side, by the road side, near to Homelife stretch. Mountains of fresh coconut. What so special? It is very fresh, cold, and taste very nice.....different from ordinary (Note, this is not Thai Fragrant coconut). Try it at hot afternoon....ahhhhh
  27. Claypot "Lou Xu Fan" - Petaling Street. They sell a variety of fried noodles, but the signature dish is their Lou Xu Fan. Super nice and delicious.
  28. Air Mata Kucing - Petaling Street, corner stall near popular book store. Super pack with people. Very nice drink and cooling.
